Volunteer callout! Step by step: a journey through the Irish language revival in Derry.

About Us

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin is a vibrant Irish Language, arts and cultural centre in Derry. Our vision is for a shared, bilingual community in the North West, invested in Irish culture in its broadest sense. We build and serve a bilingual community, and tend to the creative and cultural needs of Irish speakers, learners and musicians of all ages, through Irish classes from beginner to advanced; a full arts programme; cross-community peace building and reconciliation work, and an education programme in the community.

We welcome about 12,000 visitors each year, who come to engage in cultural activity primarily through Irish! Since opening our doors in 2009, we've played a pivotal role in community development and promotion of Irish language and culture in the city and beyond.

We are embarking on an exciting project to celebrate and preserve the linguistic and cultural heritage of our beloved city. The project will work with volunteers over 6-months to research and record the history of the Irish language, and in particular its revival, in the city. Culminating in the creation of a guided tour and self-guided audio tour, along with a pamphlet that can be sold in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin to share our rich linguistic heritage of the city with local people and tourists alike. We are looking for people interested in volunteering their time and enthusiasm, as part of a team that will work with our project facilitator in shining a spotlight on our heritage!

What will the volunteer role involve?

  • To research and record the history of the Irish language in Derry, reading documents and interviewing key stakeholders
  • Developing new skills, helping with the development and production of an audio tour and walking tour, and pamphlet on the history of the Irish language in Derry
  • To contribute to a event celebrating 15 years of the Cultúrlann’s existence in Derry

We will also be offering some exciting training opportunities, alongside your name being listed on the brochure, and a chance to celebrate this important milestone at the launch event!

Who is this opportunity for?

  • A knowledge and passion for Irish and for cultural heritage
  • A willingness to use whatever Irish you have in the project
  • Excellent personal and communication skills
  • Experience working in teams and with individuals
