BISHOP MAGINN: Good Shepherd in a Time of Hunger
Multi-media presentation by Turlough McConnell
Edward Maginn (1802-1849) was one of the signal humanitarians of his or any age. He was an early advocate of Catholic Emancipation and supporter of Daniel O’Connell in the Repeal movement. Central to his relief efforts during the Great Hunger in Derry and Donegal, Maginn sought to rescue the poor in his diocese from starvation. This dramatic presentation highlights the extraordinary humility and relentless energy of a true altruist whose historical significance demands tribute.

Was the Great Irish Famine an Ecological Disaster?
The proximate cause of the Great Irish Famine of 1846-50 was a potato blight that affected most of Western Europe. Why was the blight’s impact so severe in Ireland, but not elsewhere? Join Dr. Alan Fernihough, lecturer in economics at Queen’s University, Belfast, to hear about his ongoing research on The Causes and Consequences of the Great Irish Famine. Using Geographical Information System (GIS) data and statistical analyses, this lecture will touch on age-old questions such as what made Ireland so vulnerable to blight, and could more have been done to alleviate famine hunger and disease.
