The Documentary Film tells the story of how this engagement came about and follows the events during the Fleadh as they unfold.

It is a story of courage, trust and celebration and the start of a relationship that has continued to grow and build. It aims to encourage dialogue, challenge perceptions and provide the opportunity for people to learn from our experiences.

Watch the Fleadh Engagement Film

(15 minutes)

Discuss/Think

(10 minutes)

In small groups, use  Worksheet One as a stimulus to discuss and note down:

  • What it is you think of, when you think of the Fleadh?
  • What it is you think of, when you think of Marching Bands?
  • Why do you think the way you do about the Fleadh and Marching Bands?

Each group feeds back their work so that the teacher can use this as a springboard for a short discussion about stereotyping and the influence of the media, politicians and myths around the Fleadh and traditional Irish music and marching bands.

This film introduces the engagement between An Gaelaras and the Londonderry Bands Forum in 2013, looking at how the relationship came about, the challenges that were involved in it and some of the outcomes of the engagement.

Using Worksheet Two as a stimulus, divide into small groups and note down:

  • Occasions when your views or expectations have been proven wrong of a situation or a person.

  • When you think of Marching Bands what comes to mind?
  • Why do you think the way you do about the Fleadh and Marching Bands?
